Hamilton Brew Tour 2017

Hamilton, aka The Hammer, Steeltown, is an industrious city located at the west end of Lake Ontario an hour outside of Toronto.  It's had a rough reputation but as of recent is rising above preconceived judgement, boasting a youthful commerce/maker culture, with interesting art happenings and a healthy brewing scene.

The best way to enjoy a day in Hamilton is by car as it is quite large and both sites and breweries are spread out. There are 3 breweries all very different in vibe and experience which can be spread out between some city sites, snacking and wandering.

1. Collective Arts Brewing

Coming into the city one of the first and most notorious breweries is Collective Arts. They host lots of great events in their brewery and outdoor Beergarden. Check out their on-line Event Calendar when planning your day to really soak in some local Hammertime. Otherwise there is a small bottle shop/tasting space where you can sip a pint while perusing their artist collab can art gallery.

2. Fairweather Brewing Company

This little gem is tucked away from the downtown core embodying a laid-back, low key vibe. Fairweather is developing some really flavourful brews which can be enjoyed in their tap room with a little snack from neighbourhood vendors.

Just down the road, literally a stone's throw is Grain & Grit a small batch brewery set to open Fall 2017. Check if they're open to sneak in an extra stop along your way to or from Fairweather.

3. Merit Brewing

Right in the downtown core lives Merit, with it's industrial inspired interior, extensive beer offerings and a food menu to boot. I recommend ending your day here with a wander along James Street North. Saturdays have a great energy with shop doors open, cafes a buzz and a steady flow of local pedestrian traffic.

The individuality of these 3 breweries represent the changing climate and diversity of this city. It's going to be super fun to see how Hamilton evolves, like a good barrel-age it's just getting better and more interesting with time.
